How to Check VA Claim Status & Use VERA in 2026

Once you file, the waiting game starts—and the anxiety is real. The good news: you can check your VA claim status yourself, see what VBA is waiting on, and use VERA when you need a human conversation—not another hold message.

In mid-2026, VA publicly highlighted faster average processing (roughly the high-70-day range) and a much smaller backlog of claims pending over 125 days. That is encouraging national news. It is not a promise about your claim. Use the tools below to track what is actually happening on your file. Educational only—not legal advice.

1. Check status on VA.gov (first stop)

  1. Sign in at VA.gov Track Claims.
  2. Open the disability claim you want to review.
  3. Note the current phase, last update, and any evidence or exam requests.
  4. Upload documents the VA asked for—do not assume a fax “got there.”
Screenshot or save PDFs of status changes and letters. If you later file a supplemental claim or HLR, a clean timeline of what VBA asked for—and when you responded—helps.

2. What the claim phases usually mean

Exact labels can vary, but most claims move through stages like:

  • Claim received / under review: VBA acknowledged the filing and is reviewing content.
  • Evidence gathering: waiting on exams, private records, or your response to a request.
  • Review of evidence / preparation for decision: development winding down; a rater may be assigned.
  • Decision / complete: rating decision issued—read the letter carefully before you celebrate or panic.
“No update for two weeks” is common during exam scheduling. “No update for months with an unanswered evidence request sitting open” is a reason to act—upload what you can and schedule VERA.

3. VERA: talk to someone without camping the phone line

VERA (Virtual Engagement Request for Assistance) is VA's scheduling tool for virtual/phone appointments with VA staff. Use it when you need clarity—not when you only want to vent that the national average is 78 days and you are on day 40.

Good VERA questions:

Evidence That Wins

  • Is my claim waiting on a specific C&P exam or contractor?
  • Did you receive the private records / DBQ / buddy letters I uploaded on [date]?
  • Is there an open evidence request I still need to answer?
  • Has the claim been assigned to a rater, or is it still in development?

Schedule through VA's VERA / appointment tools on VA.gov (search “VERA VA” from your signed-in account or benefits pages). Bring claim number, conditions claimed, and a short list of questions.

Many Veterans find a VERA check-in every 14–21 days useful when status looks frozen— frequent enough to catch problems, not so often you get the same auto-script. Details also live in Step 8: claim tracking.

4. What 2026 “average wait” headlines mean for you

VA announced in July 2026 that the backlog of compensation/pension claims pending more than 125 days fell below 70,000, with average completion times reported around the high-70-day range. Those are system averages. Complex multi-condition claims, delayed exams, or missing records can take longer. Simple, well-developed claims can finish faster.

Do not use averages to decide whether to file. Use them to set expectations—and to know that “waiting” is not the same as “forgotten” unless your online status and VERA both show a real stall.

5. What to do while you wait

  1. Respond to every VA request as soon as you can.
  2. Keep gathering evidence for the next step if needed— DBQ vs nexus, buddy letters.
  3. Estimate rating math with the VA disability calculator (estimates only).
  4. If denied later, use what to do after a denial.

Processing times and tools change. Verify current status features and VERA scheduling on VA.gov. Educational only—not legal advice. No timeline or outcome is guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my VA claim status online?

Sign in at VA.gov, open Track Claims / Claim Status, and review phase updates and evidence requests. Upload anything VBA asked for directly in the tool when possible.

What is VERA for VA claims?

VERA lets you schedule a virtual or phone appointment with VA staff about your claim. It is for status and development questions—not a substitute for a C&P exam.

How long does a VA disability claim take in 2026?

Mid-2026 VA messaging pointed to average processing around the high-70-day range and a reduced backlog of older claims. Your claim may be shorter or longer. Treat averages as context, not a deadline.

Why is my claim stuck in evidence gathering?

Often exams or records. Check for open requests, upload evidence, confirm exam appointments, and use VERA if nothing moves for weeks.

Should I call every day about my claim?

No. Monitor online, answer requests fast, and use VERA on a steady cadence when status looks stuck.
